Too Much Back Surgery?

There is an ongoing debate among medical professional. The debate is centered around the question: "Is there too much back surgery being perform?" More to the point: How effective is the surgery. According to a report in USA Today many are questioning how much unnecessary back operation are being conducted in this country.

With the high costs of surgery (Medicare paid an average of $16,842 per operation in 2004) it's important to look deeper into this question. Most people suffering from back pain recover without surgery, medication, physical therapy, exercise helps most people get relief without an operation. For the rest who undergo surgery there's no promise of relief. In my own case I qualified for an operation because my back problem was the result of an accident. However after the procedure I still experienced pain, had to undergo several weeks of physical therapy and miss eight weeks of work.
